Course Syllabus & Learning Modules

Drone Technology Foundations

Study drone systems, aircraft categories, control concepts, operational awareness, responsible preparation and project documentation through six structured learning modules.

Educational scope: This course supports independent learning. It does not create formal enrollment, award academic credit, issue credentials, provide FAA certification or grant flight authorization.

Module 1

Drone Systems Overview

A drone system includes more than the aircraft. It may include the controller, communication link, batteries, payload, software, support equipment and the person responsible for preparation and operation.

Objective 1
Describe a drone as part of a connected system.
Objective 2
Separate aircraft components from supporting equipment.

Learning Activity

Module 2

Aircraft Categories

Drone platforms can be organized by physical design, intended use, operating environment and payload requirements. Common categories include multirotor, fixed-wing and hybrid aircraft.

Objective 1
Identify common drone platform categories.
Objective 2
Compare basic strengths and limitations.

Learning Activity

Module 3

Core Components

Core components may include the frame, propulsion system, flight controller, sensors, communication equipment, power system and payload. Each component contributes to system capability and limitations.

Objective 1
Identify major aircraft components.
Objective 2
Explain how components work together.

Learning Activity

Module 4

Control Concepts

Basic control concepts include lift, thrust, yaw, pitch, roll, altitude management, orientation awareness and communication between the aircraft and controller.

Objective 1
Define yaw, pitch and roll.
Objective 2
Explain why orientation awareness matters.

Learning Activity

Module 5

Responsible Preparation

Responsible preparation includes understanding the aircraft, reviewing the environment, checking equipment condition, considering people and property, and identifying external rules or authorizations that may apply.

Objective 1
Organize a preparation checklist.
Objective 2
Recognize when outside authorization is necessary.

Learning Activity

Module 6

Foundation Project: Drone System Map

Combine the course concepts into a written system map showing the aircraft category, major components, supporting equipment, control concepts and responsible preparation steps.

Project Goal
Demonstrate understanding of a complete drone system.
Portfolio Evidence
Create a report that can be added to your learner portfolio.
